![]() I was an apprentice at Dennis Bros between 1997 and 1971, and following this apprenticeship I spent some time working in the experimental department. In 1973 I was engaged on all night running of a D type chassis (Jaguar engine) as part of tests on the power take-off. There were just two of us on the night shifts, plus the night watchman in the gatehouse. The tests lasted about two weeks with this vehicle. The chassis was being used for development, and so was loaded with test weights. The engine, gearbox and power take-off were rigged with temperature sensors connected to dial gauges. We had to take readings every 15 minutes. There were no issues. Each night consisted of approximately 6 hours continuous running. The suction hose drew water from the test tank and the two discharge hoses returned the water immediately back to the tank. I remember discussing the way the pump test water was being warmed by this continuous process. At times it could be a bit boring. We took turns snoozing in the test office or listening to Radio Luxembourg. Whenever I hear 'Horse With No Name' by America I am taken straight back to those nights. I also remember making toast on the red hot exhaust. Using a box brownie camera I took a selection of photographs, one of which is shown above. I loved my time at Dennis but eventually left the company and ended up as a plumber. |
