Swiss Postbus

3-axle Enviro 500

A contribution from Peter Phillips. Photo © Fredi Räber. Switzerland is well known for its excellent public transport, and the yellow Postbuses are familiar sight everywhere. They range from 11-seaters serving small villages in the mountains to bendy-buses and double-deckers serving more populous areas. In the last couple of years nineteen 3-axle Enviro 500 double-deckers have entered service near St Gallen (NE Switzerland) on routes previously worked by Neoplan Centroliners, also double-deckers. These new buses are basically left hand drive versions of the Enviros currently in service in Hong Kong but with triple doors and a seating capacity of 80. Fredi Räber, a Swiss bus enthusiast with a keen interest in the British bus scene has made a comprehensive study of these magnificent buses – and has taken some equally magnificent photos. This picture shows the first bus 10431 (Reg. No. AR44137) in a typical setting, suitably decorated for its inauguration on 20th May 2017. AR is the registration allocated to the Canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden. A further 13 examples have recently been purchased by Transports Publics Lausannois (Lausanne City Transport) and are now in service near the Lake of Geneva
